10/2/26: Part II – Numerous Top Prospects Knocking on the NHL’s Door

Yesterday I reviewed several prospects appearing to be on the cusp of making the leap to the NHL after time spent developing their skills at various levels. The link to that article can be found below. Today’s review is a continuation of that theme, concerning the Minnesota, Los Angeles, Tampa & Ottawa organizations.

Forward Charlie Stramel, Minnesota (21st overall in 2023) – After making a serious push for an opening-night roster spot with the Wild, Stramel ultimately was reassigned to AHL Iowa to receive much more ice time in contributing to his development. In appearing in 3 of 4 pre-season games for Minnesota, Stramel embodied a future dominant force, drawing comparisons to players such as Vegas pivot Jack Eichel for his explosive skating and skillful play in small areas. NHL Central Scouting projects Stramel to make his NHL arrival prior to season’s end.

D-Man Henry Brzustewicz, Los Angeles (31st overall in 2025) – Coming off a career with the OHL’s London Knights that included a Memorial Cup Championship in 2024-25, Brzustewicz will begin his pro career with AHL Ontario this season, taking advantage of the new CBA rule allowing one 19-year-old CHL prospect from each club to join the AHL. Coaches and staff noted that he is significantly stronger and calmer in pressure situations than most young draft picks, showing much poise with defensive-zone gaps and excellent decision-making. Like Stramel, he is the top-rated prospect in his organization, although he is not projected to make his NHL arrival until next season.

Forward Sam O’Reilly, Tampa Bay (32nd overall in 2024 by EDM) – Among the final cuts from the Lightning’s roster, the 20-year-old Toronto native will begin his professional career in AHL Syracuse this season. O’Reilly definitely had a season to remember for the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers in 2025-26, being named the MVP of the OHL (regular season and playoffs) and the Memorial Cup tournament. Although beginning the year with the Crunch, he is expected to land in Tampa Bay at some point during 2026-27.

Forward Kasper Halttunen, Ottawa (36th overall in 2023 by SJS) – Upon a change in organizations this off-season (traded by SJS alongside William Eklund for the 9th overall pick in 2026), Halttunen participated in the Devils’ rookie showcase. He immediately blew away the coaching staff with his bomb of a shot, as well as his immediate chemistry with fellow prospects such as Jaxon Cover. Possessing a power-forward frame (6’3″ 207 LBS.), he was sent to AHL Belleville to further develop his defensive skills and off-the-puck play. He is projected to occupy a roster spot in Ottawa next season.
