10/15/26: Moving on From Player Safety Concerns, Arizona State U. Hires Hakstol as Bench Boss

Following an off-ice workout leaving sophomore transfer and St. Louis draft pick Matthew Mayich on life support, Arizona State University has hired long-time NHL and NCAA coach Dave Hakstol as its Head Coach. The hiring comes shortly following suspended former Head Coach Greg Powers and the Sun Devils reaching “a mutual agreement to part ways.” Prior to his agreement to leave the program (ASU officials insist Powers was not fired, and that he did not resign), on September 30 Powers was placed on paid administrative leave by the school.

Although ASU made these moves with the intention to close this chapter of its hockey program and move forward, the Mayich family does not consider the issue resolved, calling the agreement with Powers an effort to avoid accountability. With respect to Matthew, he remains on life support in a Tempe hospital. While the Mayich family attorney says he has “zero chance of recovery,” hopefully this is incorrect.
