Figuring prominently into Chicago’s 2-0 regular-season start to 2026-27 were twin brothers Trevor and Nolan Shorter. The Shorter brothers, just 16 years of age and not NHL draft-eligible until 2028, already stand 6’7″ and weigh in at a reported 212 pounds, making their family name almost laughable. They also are very good players, as evidenced by their combined four-point performance (3 assists for d-man Trevor, and 1 assist for forward Nolan) in the Steel’s victories over league rivals Lincoln and Omaha. At the conclusion of their respective junior careers, the Windy City natives will stay close to home by attending the University of Notre Dame in 2028-29.
Because the Shorters were born in 2009, they are ineligible to compete at this year’s U17 Hockey Challenge in Oakville, Ontario in November. However, they will still be able to play against Slovakia’s Dominik Bednar (Sioux City) and Canada’s Zaac Charbonneau (Muskegon), both of whom will be in Oakville, during the USHL season. I am definitely interested in seeing the results of the league match-ups featuring these players.
Rankings obviously have not been published yet for the 2028 draft. However, with their sheer size and first-rate mobility, look for the name “Shorter” surfacing quite often concerning that year’s selection process.
