9/21/26: Nineteen-Year-Old Reschny (CGY) Named Youngest Captain in History of North Dakota Hockey; Verhoeff (SJS) & Carels (CGY) Headline D Corps

Via a team vote, The University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks have selected sophomore forward Cole Reschny, a 19-year-old Calgary Flames draft pick (18th overall in 2025) from Saskatchewan, as their 2026-27 captain. Reschny joins a leadership group rounded out by assistant captains Mac Swanson (PIT), Cody Croal (Free Agent), and Anthony Menghini (Free Agent), all wearing letters for the first time. Coach Dane Jackson praised Reschny’s mature presence and work ethic in leading to his captaincy, built on his freshman-leading 35 points, NCHC Rookie of the Year award, and international leadership with Team Canada.

North Dakota definitely appears poised to challenge for a National Championship once again. Added to the above-mentioned forward group is point-a-game producer Will Zellers (BOS), and they are anchored by a D-corps featuring high-end prospects Keaton Verhoeff (SJS), Carson Carels (CGY), Ethan MacKenzie (TOR), and Sam Laurila (NYI).
