Top-ranked University of Michigan used a goal from Pittsburgh prospect Will Horcoff (24th overall in 2025) with 0.1 seconds remaining in regulation to defeat No. 5 Western Michigan University 3-2 this past Friday, at a sold-out Yost Ice Arena. The dramatic finish mirrored Michigan football’s narrow win over the same Broncos this season, and drew both cheers and criticism from fans of the schools.
Horcoff is on a point-per-game pace for the Wolverines through 7 games (3G 4A), duplicating his efforts from a season ago (39 points in 40 games, and a team-leading 25 goals). The son of long-time NHL player and current Red Wings’ Interim General Manager Shawn Horcoff, the younger Horcoff is the 3rd-ranked prospect in the Pens’ organization, and is projected to begin his NHL career in 2028-29.
