A business based in Toronto, as well as one of its native sons, both have made headlines in the sporting world recently. Earlier this month, Rogers Communications completed the acquisition of Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), thereby increasing its ownership interest in the professional sports conglomerate to 100%. Rogers acquired the remaining 25% ownership stake in MLSE from Kilmer Sports Inc., at the price of $4.35 billion (Canadian dollars).
Also occurring this October, two-time defending NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of 2025 champion Oklahoma City acquired an ownership interest in the Athletico de Madrid football club. The club’s majority owner is US firm Apollo Sports Group, which purchased its 55% interest in the club earlier this year. Although the club was valued at $2.8 billion (US dollars) at the time of Apollo’s purchase, neither the size of Alexander’s ownership interest nor the amount he paid for it were disclosed publicly. Bringing in an athlete of SGA’s visibility, coupled with Athletico’s recent signing of South Korean soccer star Kang-In Lee, both are in keeping with Apollo’s stated ambition of generating significant international growth for the club.
